Summer School on Secularisation and its implications

Hans-Michael Haußig, Johann Ev. Hafner

According to many scholars, secularisation marks the gradual loss of importance of religion in the West during the last centuries. Whereas in medieval times, religion was of major importance in all parts of society and in all parts of life, in modern times religion can neither be seen as the decisive element in forming the society nor as an important factor in the personal life of men. This concept of secularism is seen now more critical. On the one hand, it is only focused on the official religious communities. These however do not represent all kinds of religiosity practiced by the people there were always tendencies of individual religious practices or orientations, be they non-canonized folk traditions or be they representations of more intellectual developments among the adherents of certain religions.
On the other hand, there are phenomena, as e.g. public remembrances. Although they are commonly not conceived as religious, they nevertheless display a certain similarity to practices known from the official religions.
The Potsdam Summer School, which will be held in cooperation with the Institute for Religious studies of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe university Frankfurt/Main, the University of Religions and Denominations, Qom/Iran and the Az-Zahra-University, Teheran/Iran, aims to investigate the various implications of secularization in regard to the relation between official and popular religion as well as investigate the function of different kinds of public remembrances.
